Black Warrior Riverkeeper and the Friends of the
Locust Fork River Submit Forever Wild Nomination
3200-acre property owned by
Birmingham Water Works Board on the Locust Fork proposed for
conservation
Black Warrior Riverkeeper and the Friends of the
Locust Fork River submitted a nomination for 3,200 acres along
the Locust Fork of the Black Warrior River in Jefferson County
& Blount County to be protected as public property by the
Alabama Forever
Wild Program. The property, currently owned by the
Birmingham Water Works Board, has been for sale since the

The Locust Fork River has been compared to the Yellowstone and the Gallatin in Montana. Unlike those rivers, the Locust Fork doesn't enjoy the protection of flowing through a national park. It flows through Alabama. It is our treasure, and only the people of Alabama can save it.
The Birmingham News broke the story of Birmingham Water Works and Sewer Board plans to dam the Locust Fork River on January 20, 1991. This crisis led to the formation of the Friends of the Locust Fork River, which has to date successfully prevented the dam.
Birmingham Water Works Board OKs $329
million expansion plan!! Great news!
The project involves building a pumping station about three miles
downstream of the Bankhead Lock and Dam along the

Friends of the Locust Fork River is a grassroots organization dedicated to preserving the integrity of the Locust Fork River in its natural free-flowing state.
The Locust Fork River With scenic beauty unsurpassed in Alabama - jagged cliffs, waterfalls, whitewater, smooth flowing sections, and sandy beaches - this mountain stream flows freely through Etowah, Marshall, and Blount Counties to form the Black Warrior River in northwest Jefferson County. The Locust Fork river is listed in the top 2% of the nation's rivers with "outstandingly remarkable" values. Come float this wonderful river. Here we have map and putin/take out info.
